Being in a relationship can be a huge blessing because you know there is someone who deeply cares about you.
And being in a relationship can also be really challenging because you know there is someone who deeply cares about you.
Signs Your Relationships are Being Affected
When you’re bad at time management and you’re single, you may be more sleep deprived than you would like, your friends may joke that you’re always busy, and your mom may constantly tell you to call her more often.
But when you’re in a relationship and in particular when you’re married with kids, something that’s a joke to your friends can be deeply painful to your significant other.
Your bad time management may lead to overworking where you’re gone or on your computer on nights and weekends. Or you may travel quite frequently. Or you may just be so consumed thinking about work that you’re not mentally present. Your spouse may complain that even when you’re here, you’re not really here.
Or your bad time management leads to underworking where you feel so overwhelmed that you avoid getting things done during the day. Then you’re forced to do your work on nights and weekends to make up for the squandered time. You feel stressed, pressured, and irritable–most of all with yourself. And sometimes you get accused of not pulling your own weight in the home.
You love the people in your life.
You want to be a great spouse, partner, and parent, but you don’t know how without failing somewhere else.
Change is Possible
If you feel this way, you’re not alone. Time management – or lack thereof – causing issues with your significant other is a big reason that clients choose to work with me. I’ve even had spouses gift the other time management coaching to help alleviate the stress.
It’s one thing when you hurt yourself, it’s quite another when you hurt those you love.
When your significant other is upset because you’re working late, emotionally absent, or generally unavailable, it’s usually because they really love you and care about you and value your support. The opposite of love isn’t anger, it’s indifference.
My goal is to help you improve your time management so that you can:
- Get more done in less time during normal work hours
- Reduce your stress levels
- And be more peaceful and present to the people who you care about and who care about you.
Fixing your time management issues can’t solve all of your relationship challenges, but it can definitely help.
